Nail shape!

Heyyy! I wanted to take a moment and talk nail shape. I love that pretty much every shape is acceptable these days. When I started doing nails 18 years ago the only “cool” nail shape was square. Square with white tips. Then things got crazy when colored acrylic made its entrance. Still… only square and french tips. Only “old ladies” had round nails. Round painted nails were so uncool. Plus, gel polish didn’t exist and you had to sit and wait for your polish to dry. I only used acrylic paint or acrylic for nail art. Nearly everything I’ve learned is self taught or I found out how to do it online.

Throughout the years I’ve had almost every nail shape. I have noticed how each shape makes my hands look so different. I have fairly small hands and each time I’ve changed shape I like it for different reasons. I had coffin for a really long time and then I switched to oval. A few weeks ago I broke a nail really short and instead of fixing it I decided to keep them short and square. I hated it. But, that is what made me want to write this post. There are shapes that look better with your hands, I still say do whatever you like!

This is when my nail broke and I was playing with shape. They were all the same length. Oval, square and tapered a little like coffin.

Both pictures are my hands. 9 years apart. Obviously there is a little bit of a skill difference here too. The ones on the left kinda look like a toddler painted them. It was one of the first times using gel polish. Actually, I think it was we shellac. But the shape makes such a difference in my hands.
Always the claw hand pictures for me. This dates me a bit but this was my go-to nail. I was obsessed with the long glitter. Looking back I think it makes my nails look super stubby.

This is “tell me you are a nail tech without telling me you are a nail tech”. I went like this for over a week with 2 totally different hands. One hand was already at week 3 grow out.
My favorite shape for me is almond or coffin. I love the look of short square nails on other people’s hands. For me though, it’s gotta be more tapered. My hands are just too small for short square.
